Why am I so hungry at night is usually answered as a discipline question. The trials answer it as an arithmetic one: short sleep adds calories to the following day and adds nothing to what you spend.

Twenty to ten. You ate at seven, properly, sitting down, a meal you would happily describe to a doctor.

And here you are at the fridge with the door open, not hungry in any way that resembles hunger at one in the afternoon, looking for something that is not really food. Cheese, standing up. Four squares of chocolate that become the row.

The next morning it gets filed under willpower, which is where most things about the evening go. So the question worth asking is a narrower one. Why am I so hungry at night specifically, when you were perfectly fine at four in the afternoon and eating like an adult at seven.

The short answer: because of what happened the night before. A team at King’s College London pooled 11 controlled studies covering 172 participants and found that people who were sleep restricted, sleeping between three and a half and five and a half hours, ate an average of 385 calories more the following day than people given seven to twelve hours in bed.¹ The same analysis found no significant change in how much energy they spent over those 24 hours.¹ The extra intake came with proportionally more fat and less protein.¹ It is not a character trait. It is a shortfall being repaid at the worst hour of the day.

Why am I so hungry at night rather than at breakfast?

Because the deficit accumulates through the day and the evening is the first hour with nothing else in it.

The signalling has been running since you woke. Ghrelin, which is produced in the stomach and raises appetite, sits higher after a short night. Leptin, which comes from fat tissue and suppresses appetite, sits lower.² That is a nudge, not a shove, and at nine in the morning it is completely inaudible under a meeting.

What changes at half past nine at night is not the signal. It is that everything drowning it out has finished. No calls, no lists, nobody in the room needing an answer. The nudge has been there all day and this is simply the first point at which you can hear it.

Which is why the evening feels like the failure and looks like the cause. It is neither. It is the moment the day stops competing.

What the 385 calories actually mean

They mean the body asked for more fuel and did not ask you to move more.

This is the finding worth carrying. It would be one thing if short sleep raised both sides of the equation, taking in more and burning more. The pooled analysis found no significant effect on energy expenditure over the following 24 hours.¹ So on a night of five hours, the following day tends to run with a one-sided adjustment.

The Stanford Lifestyle Medicine group adds a detail about what gets eaten rather than how much: short sleep increases cravings for ultra-processed foods, sugar and alcohol, and they point to the endocannabinoid system, which regulates sleep, mood and appetite, as part of the mechanism.² That matches the trial data, which found the extra calories arriving proportionally as fat rather than protein.¹

None of which is a claim about what happens to your weight. It is a claim about one variable, on the days after a short night, and the fact that the variable is not discipline.

What the research found

The King’s College London analysis is a pooled review of controlled experiments rather than a survey, which is what gives it force: the sleep was manipulated deliberately and the eating was measured afterwards, so the direction of the effect is not in doubt. Average result, 385 calories a day, with expenditure unchanged.¹

The limitation, in the researchers’ own words: most of the included studies ran in controlled laboratory conditions over periods of one day to two weeks, so they may not reflect what happens in ordinary life over the long term, and the team called for more research in everyday settings.¹ Worth adding: 172 participants across 11 studies is a modest total, and these were not women in their fifties whose short nights arrive uninvited rather than by protocol. The mechanism is well demonstrated. The number is an average from a laboratory, not a forecast for your Thursday.

The first column is a fuel shortfall wearing the costume of a personal failing, which is why it is so hard to argue with at the time. If the short nights are the ones where you cannot get under at all, that has a mechanism of its own worth knowing, and what the scale is doing over these years is a separate story again.

What to change first, and it is not the fridge

Move the protein earlier rather than policing the evening.

The instinct is to fix the moment: nothing in the house, a rule about after nine, a note on the fridge door. That approach asks the most depleted hour of your day to hold a line, which is a poor bet, and it does nothing about the shortfall that made the hour difficult.

What is worth testing instead is the shape of the day before it. The pooled trials found the extra intake arriving proportionally as fat with protein reduced.¹ So the practical experiment is to put a real amount of protein into breakfast and lunch and see whether the evening changes on its own. Not a new diet. A different order.

Run it for a week on the days after short nights, since those are the days the effect shows up, and pay attention to what happens between nine and ten rather than what happens on the scale. You are testing one variable, which is why it is worth changing only one.

And if the short nights themselves are the constant, that is the more useful target, though it is also the least available one for most women in the middle of this. The three o’clock waking has its own mechanism, and it is not solved by trying harder in the evening either.

Questions worth having an answer to

Is this a menopause thing or a sleep thing?
Mostly a sleep thing that the transition makes more common, because broken nights get more frequent through perimenopause. The appetite mechanism described here was demonstrated in controlled sleep experiments, not in menopause research, which is worth knowing when you decide what to change.

Can I make it up at the weekend?
Not fully. The Stanford group notes that weekend recovery sleep does not restore the metabolic balance disrupted during the week.² A long Saturday morning is worth having and it is not a repair.

Should I just eat more at dinner?
Possibly, and it is worth testing, though the trial data points at composition rather than timing: the shortfall showed up as less protein and more fat across the day.¹ Adding volume to dinner alone tends to change less than people expect.

When is night eating worth raising with a doctor?
If you are waking in the night to eat and cannot get back to sleep without it, if eating in the evening has become secretive or distressing, or if it is happening alongside a low mood that has lasted weeks. Those are worth a conversation rather than a rule.

The one move

On the day after a short night, put real protein into breakfast rather than into a plan. Eggs, yoghurt, whatever is quickest. Change nothing else, and notice what half past nine feels like that evening.
